New creative community hub opens in Stroud

A new community-led creative hub has opened in Stroud town centre, bringing together circular fashion, clothing repair, creative enterprise and community collaboration under one roof.

The official launch of Emergence Commons and Emergence Restock will take place on Wednesday from 6pm to 9pm, at 1 Kendrick Street with Milligan Beaumont officially cutting the ribbon to open the space.

The space operates under the name Emergence Commons, a new initiative designed to support creativity, sustainability and community-led activity in the heart of Stroud.

The ground floor is home to Emergence Restock, a circular fashion project focused on clothing reuse, repair, upcycling and extending the life of garments. Visitors can browse curated vintage clothing, repaired fashion and creative reuse projects while learning more about sustainable alternatives to fast fashion.

Upstairs, Emergence Commons will provide flexible space for workshops, coworking, makers, freelancers, community groups and creative collaborations. The aim is to create an accessible environment where people can develop ideas, share skills and work alongside others who are building projects with social, environmental and creative impact.

Founded by marketing consultant and fashion designer Shalize Nicholas, the project has grown from a desire to tackle textile waste while creating opportunities for people to connect, learn and collaborate.

Emergence Commons is being developed by founder Shalize Nicholas and director Stella Parks. Stella brings decades of experience in community leadership and environmental projects, having previously served as Mayor of Stroud, Chief Executive of Stroud Valleys Project and manager of Lansdown Hall & Gallery. Together they hope to create a welcoming space that supports creativity, sustainability, local enterprise and community collaboration.

Shalize said: “People often have brilliant ideas but don’t always have access to affordable space, equipment or a supportive community around them. Emergence Commons has been created as a place where people can come together to make, repair, learn, work and build projects that benefit both themselves and the wider community.

Emergence Restock is the first project within that vision. It focuses on giving clothing a longer life through repair, reuse and creative redesign, while helping people see waste as a resource rather than something to throw away.

Future plans include clothing repair workshops, visible mending sessions, creative courses, community events, coworking opportunities and partnerships with local artists, makers, charities and independent businesses.

Emergence Commons hopes to become a focal point for creativity, circular economy projects and community-led enterprise in Stroud.
