New life for historic cemetery

The Chapels of Rest in the Bisley Road Cemetery, one of Stroud’s best known landmarks, are to be repaired and renovated for a wide range of community activities.

Stroud Preservation Trust is leasing the Chapels from Stroud District Council for seven years.  The Trust will repair damaged parts of the roof, floor and interior walls and will reglaze the windows. Stroud District Council is providing a £75,000 grant to assist with this work.

Catherine Braun, Leader of Stroud District Council, said: “The Chapels are an important part of Stroud’s built heritage, and much valued by the local community.  We’re delighted that the Stroud Preservation Trust will be taking on a long lease for the site and wish the trustees all the best as they start to plan essential repairs.”

This ambitious project needs more volunteers, to help the Preservation Trust clean up the interiors of the Chapels, weed around the outside walls, fund raise and generally help make the project a success.  Potential users are already lining up, including local artists – events are planned for later this year.

Stroud Preservation Trust hopes that the project will work with two other vibrant local projects, Heavens Valley and the Trinity Rooms.  Camilla Hale, Chair of SPT added: “The Trust is delighted to have finally agreed the lease for the Chapels and we look forward to making this important building even more significant in the lives of local people.”
