A long-standing name in horticultural retailing is set to plant roots at a former garden centre in Harsefield.
Dobbies Garden Centre shut last month, but British Garden Centres have taken ownership and we will be reopening on February 28. The family-owned business now boast more than 60 garden centres across the UK.
Charles Stubbs, Founder and Director of British Garden Centres said: “We are delighted to be adding the Gloucester store to our business and build on the foundations to grow the centre, so it continues to thrive. This is a significant moment for British Garden Centres as the acquisition of the former Dobbies Gloucester cements our position as the largest garden centre group by stores in the UK. We are thrilled to be part of the local community and look forward to welcoming back customers and meeting new ones as we drive Gloucester Garden Centre forward.”

British Garden Centres (BGC) is the UK’s largest family-owned garden centre group with 67 centres around the country. The group is owned and led by The Stubbs family, who also own and operate Woodthorpe Leisure Park in Lincolnshire.
BGC was launched in 1987 with the opening of Woodthorpe Garden Centre by brothers Charles and Robert Stubbs. Since 2018 it has expanded rapidly with the acquisition of 50 garden centres allowing it to grow from its heartland to the business it is now with 67 garden centres spread from Carmarthen to Ramsgate, Wimborne to East Durham.
The group has a team of 2,700 colleagues working across the garden centres, restaurants, growing nurseries, distribution centres, Woodthorpe Leisure Park, and Woody’s Restaurant & Bar.
The Haresfield garden centre is located near junction 12 of the M5 and has a rich history in horticulture. Dating back to 1975, the centre was originally owned by the Jardinerie chain and was previously known as the Blooms of Gloucester before being taken over by Wyevale’s.
