What’s on in Stroud this week: 13 – 19 October

Harvest is well upon us and the clocks go back next week, and Stroud is buzzing with autumnal activities.

There’s so much to see and do up and down the five valleys, with Stroud’s inaugural Peace Fair kicking off on Friday and the Autumn Arts Trail beginning this weekend.

Plus, a bit further afield, the pumpkin patch has now opened for the season at Jolly Nice in Frampton Mansell and the Folk of Gloucester host their Apple Day celebrations on Saturday.

Regular and one off events

Biodiversity and nature restoration organisation Project Wildling invite us to celebrate the seasons with an evening workshop creating pressed flower lanterns.

Morwenna from Hands On Harps brings the gentle sound of harp music to the bar at the Prince Albert in Rodborough each month. The sessions cater for a wide range of abilities, from complete beginners to the more experienced harpists, and the rest of the bar remains open to all.

Stroud’s inaugural Peace Fair takes place at St Laurence’s Church, with talks, workshops and music across two days. Highlights include a concert from Eleanor Holliday and the Acapeeps community choir, a keynote lecture from Professor Danny Dorling and activities throughout the day on Saturday including kite-making, music, story-telling and refreshments.

The Friends of Gastrells Primary School (FoG) opening their doors this Saturday for their annual autumn fayre. Expect delicious food and lots of fun activities for all the family, including a macramé keyring making workshop.

The Cotswold Sculptors Association takes over the Sanctuary space at Brimscombe Mills for a special exhibition as part of the Autumn Arts Trail, in aid of the Long Table. The exhibition will feature a variety of sculptures from more than 40 member artists, including works in bronze, ceramics, stone, wood, metal and found materials.

Continuing this week

Jolly Nice’s annual pumpkin celebration is well under way, with free entry and more winter squash than you may care to count. Alongside the array of different-sized pumpkins, they’ve laid on mini wheelbarrows, a vintage tractor, marshmallow toasting and spacehopper racing, plus a chance to wave to Felix & Ellie the donkeys over the fence.

Further afield

The Folk of Gloucester project in Gloucester’s Westgate Street throws a bumper free harvest celebration to mark Apple Day. Expect music, a horse-drawn cider press, kids’ crafts and folk dance from Boss Morris and Lassington Oak Morris.
