Band It 34 workshops took place at Easter at Maidenhill School in Stonehouse. Sixty students created bands with fellow students, they were guided and mentored by a variety of tutors and guest performers including Dave Ayers and singer/pianist Carolina Stiles who performs as ‘Tuma’ or ‘Linah Rocio.’ All under the theme of ‘Morality’

Band names were created, songs written and re-written, videos made. Tears and laughter ensued with the learning and creativity. The four-day event ended with a final performance to a paying audience at the Sub Rooms in Stroud.

Founder and organiser Kevin Howlett said: “A ‘HUGE’ thank you all the students, parents, tutors, volunteers and sponsors. With a special thanks to Maidenhill School and The Subs for hosting the event. Hundreds of students have benefitted from Band It’s unique creative platform, now a Stroud rite of passage for musically minded teenagers and younger students. Some were inspired to form bands, or study music at college, some just gained more self-confidence and made new friends.”

Participant Freya Karia (12) wrote: “Band It is a songwriter’s workshop for young people. It is a creative experience that provides opportunities to showcase your teamwork and collaboration skills as well as improving your songwriting skills and most importantly, having fun!

“This year is my third year doing Band It and I have enjoyed every second of it. My fellow Band It’ers have described it as ‘very collaborative and fun’. The first time I did the project I was very nervous; I was shaky throughout my band’s performance, but the more time I spend on stage the less is my fear and this year I have had the most amazing time with my bandmates. My friend said, ‘It made me feel more confident with singing’ and I agree with her!”

Band It 35 will take place on 28th 29th 30th 31st October, 2024.
