Forest Green catapulted themselves to the top of the National League table after inflicting Gateshead’s first home defeat of the season.
Goals from Liam Sercombe and Christian Doidge proved the difference at the International Stadium.
Midfielder Sercombe opened the scoring with a deflected strike in the sixth minute but Gateshead’s riposte saw Tom Allan and Jovan Malcolm forcing fine stops from Bristol Rovers loanee Jed Ward.

The Forest Green goalkeeper also frustrated Tyrelle Newton and Mark Beck headed against the crossbar for Gateshead in stoppage time, but Doidge made sure of victory with a 97th minute tap-in.
Rovers travel to Oldham on Tuesday, who will include former Rovers’ players James Norwood and Many Monthe.
