A pioneering community initiative to build a climbing gym in Brimscombe, is nearing its fundraising goal.
The climbing base at Brimscombe Mill will be located above the Sanctuary, which offers talks, workshops and community gatherings.
The fundraising project has surpassed 75% of its target and now needs “one final push to the summit” before the June 30 deadline.
The project, known as Climbing Commons, aims to make climbing accessible, affordable, and inclusive for all residents.
“Climbing is more than a sport—it’s a way to build confidence, connection, and community,” said Chikara Shimasaki, a spokesperson for Stroud Climbing Commons Services. “We’re creating a space where people of all ages and backgrounds can come together, support each other, and have fun.”
The Climbing Commons is now in its final fundraising phase on the Spacehive platform. The campaign has already secured 75% of its £39,096 goal, with pledges continuing to come in from across the community. In the final weeks, the community-led initiative aims to raise an additional £10,000.
Backing the project, Cllr Steve Hyndside commented: “Climbing Commons represents a unique model of community ownership and governance. If we can get this project off the ground, it can act as a blueprint for similar initiatives elsewhere. I am hopeful that Stroud District Council will match fund some of the funds raised as part of the ‘Stroud Funding’ initiative that sees the council back projects that are in line with its strategic plan.”
The funds raised will cover essential costs, including construction materials, safety matting, climbing holds, and one year’s rent. The facility will feature 700–1,000 square feet of bouldering walls, designed to accommodate climbers of all abilities. Plans also include regular community events, subsidised sessions for young people and families, and a commitment to keeping entry costs low to ensure broad accessibility.
“This is about more than just climbing—it’s about creating a shared space that reflects the values and needs of our community,” SAID Michael Love, who leads the design. “With the finish line in sight, we’re calling on everyone who believes in this vision to help us cross it.”
