Police officer due to appear in court today

A PC has been charged with one count of common assault by beating

A police officer is due to appear in court today, Monday 4 October, to stand trial for one count of common assault by beating.

The charge relates to the use of force during an arrest of a man in Dursley on 22 November last year.

PC Richard Smith, aged 49, is due to appear at Kidderminster Magistrates’ Court following an investigation by Gloucestershire Constabulary.

He had been working in the Stroud local policing team at the time of the incident and was put on restricted duties following the charge.

The Constabulary cannot comment further due to the pending legal proceedings.
