Police prepare for protest at RAF Fairford – public safety a priority

MOST READ

A policing operation has been put in place ahead of a planned protest at RAF Fairford today, Saturday.

The base is currently being used by the United States Air Force for military operations, which has historically been a focus for demonstrations.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer had initially refused to grant permission for the US to use UK bases in its joint offensive with Israel against Iran, which caused a disagreement with President Donald Trump.

A police spokesperson said: “We fully respect the fundamental democratic right of being able to protest and we have a long history of facilitating peaceful demonstrations.

“While we will enable lawful peaceful protest, we must also balance peoples’ rights of freedom of expression and assembly, with those of the wider public to go about their lives without disruption. Should any criminality or disorder occur we will deal with this robustly.

“Officers have been liaising with organisers of today’s event and specialist liaison officers will continue to engage with them throughout.

“We are not expecting significant numbers however, we will be dynamic in our response, and we are confident we have sufficient resources in place should large numbers attend.”
