Two decades after racing in the inaugural Ginetta Junior Championship, a TV car presenter from Stroud made a spectacular return behind the wheel.
Nick Ponting, who made his mark in the Ginetta Junior Championship 20 years ago, made a remarkable return to competitive racing last weekend at Donington Park.
Competing in the Ginetta GT Academy during the British GT Championship weekend, Ponting put on a show in a highly competitive field in front of a huge crowd.

“Being back on track with Ginetta after 20 years was amazing”

Ponting’s performance was impressive, securing a two top ten finishes (9th place finish in race one, followed by 8th in race two). He truly shone in race three, where he gained four positions by the first corner, ultimately finishing P4 just missing out on a place on the podium. His return to the track was not just a personal milestone and celebration with Ginetta but also a thrilling spectacle for the large crowds present, as well as the event being streamed live online.

In addition to his racing adventures, Ponting was filming for Amazon Prime’s upcoming one-hour motorsport special titled “On The Road.”

Ponting told Stroud Times: “Being back on track with Ginetta after 20 years was amazing!
“It felt like a trip down memory lane being in the Ginetta Paddock.
“The Ginetta GT Academy is a fantastic series for experienced and amateur drivers, and the racing was as close as you’d expect. I was pretty happy to be on the pace relatively quickly but it’s given me the bug again and I want to come back for more!”
