Rare gold Sir Winston Churchill medallion collections discovered in shirt box set to go under the hammer

A remarkable group of rare commemorative gold medallions celebrating Sir Winston Churchill and Britain’s most influential Prime Ministers will be offered in Wotton Auction Rooms’ Summer Quarterly Fine & Curated Sale next week.

The collection, consigned by a local private vendor, was discovered during the clearance of a late relative’s home. Hidden within an old shirt box stored in a wardrobe, the medallions had remained largely forgotten for decades before their recent rediscovery.

Among the highlights is Lot 69, a highly desirable Medallioners Limited set of six 22-carat gold medallions depicting some of Britain’s most significant Prime Ministers: Robert Walpole, William Pitt the Elder, William Pitt the Younger, Benjamin Disraeli, William Gladstone and Sir Winston Churchill. Accompanied by original correspondence from the company’s board of directors and housed in its fitted presentation case, the set carries a pre-sale estimate of £20,000–£25,000. The six medallions have a combined weight of 331.1 grams.

Also featured is Lot 68, a rare Slade Hampton & Son Limited set of three “Mother of Parliaments” Winston Churchill medallions in 22-carat gold, silver and bronze. Issued to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the Houses of Parliament, the limited-edition set is numbered 204 of just 250 produced and retains its certificate of authenticity and fitted case. The lot is estimated at £8,000–£12,000.

Completing the group is Lot 66, a Metalimport Limited set of four 24-carat gold medallions commemorating Sir Winston Churchill, issued in 1965 and accompanied by its certificate of authenticity and fitted case. The set is estimated at £4,500–£5,000.

The discovery provides a fascinating reminder of the valuable and historically significant objects that can remain hidden within family homes for generations. With Churchill continuing to be one of the most collected figures in British history, and with strong demand for high-quality gold commemorative issues, the collection is expected to attract considerable interest from collectors, investors and Churchill enthusiasts alike.

Joseph Trinder of Wotton Auction Rooms commented: “Discoveries such as this are what make auctioneering so exciting. These medallions were found tucked away in an old shirt box while a family was clearing a relative’s home, and they represent an extraordinary combination of historical interest, rarity and intrinsic value. The Prime Ministers set is particularly impressive, while the Churchill pieces reflect the enduring appeal of one of Britain’s most iconic historical figures.”

The medallions will be offered as Lots 66, 68 and 69 in Wotton Auction Rooms’ Summer Quarterly Fine & Curated Sale on Tuesday, 30 June.
