Paintings attributed to one of the country’s best-known landscape artists have sold for more than £39,000 at Wotton Auction Rooms in Wotton-under-Edge.
The three cloud study paintings, in oil on paper, were spotted during a routine valuation appointment in the Cotswolds earlier this year. The frame carries a label from The Fine Art Society inscribed ‘Cloud Effect Studies by John Constable RA.’
Constable, who died aged 60 in 1837, lived and painted in the Dedham Vale on the border of Essex and Suffolk, and is known for his depictions of the surrounding landscape.
He is best known for his 1821 oil painting The Hay Wain which became a sensation in the art world after winning a gold medal in the Paris Salon in 1824.
The sale marked a highly successful milestone with Wotton Auction Rooms’ first Quarterly Fine Sale attracting collectors and enthusiasts from across the country.
Auctioneer and Valuer Joseph Trinder said: “Our inaugural Quarterly Fine Sale exceeded all expectations. The results demonstrate the quality of the items we offer and the enthusiasm of collectors. The auction also featured other remarkable works, including illustrations from the Studio of Peter Paul Rubens attributed to Sir Anthony van Dyck; A Head of a Bishop; and a Study of Two Heads of Apostles, after Raphael, which sold for £18,000 (plus fees). An exceptional Art Deco Natural Alexandrite Dress Ring with family provenance dating back to 1895, sold for £22,000 (plus fees).
