Registering to vote and applying for a postal vote

The UK Parliamentary General Election takes place on Thursday, July 4.

If you have changed address recently or if you are not sure if you are registered to vote you can register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

Registering only takes a few minutes and you will need your national insurance number to complete the registration.

You can apply for a postal vote and certain proxy vote applications online. Here’s all you need to know to apply online:

To apply for a postal vote online go to www.gov.uk/apply-postal-vote

  • You will be required to provide your national insurance number.
  • You will need to upload a photo of your signature (using black ink and on non-lined paper).
  • You can apply for a maximum period of 3 years, for a set time period or for a specific election.
  • Postal ballot papers can be set up to be sent to any address, it does not have to be your home address.

  • You will be required to provide your national insurance number.
  • You will need to upload a photo of your signature (using black ink and on non-lined paper).
  • You can only apply for a specific election unless you meet on of the other eligibility requirements (e.g. living overseas, disability).

Remember you are now also required to present photo ID at the polling station. More information on Voter ID can be found on Stroud District Councils’ website including how to apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate if you do not have an acceptable form of photo ID.
