I arrive at the stunning Painswick boutique hotel nestled in the picturesque ‘Queen of the Cotswolds’ village, accompanied by my beautiful niece Cara, who is also a bit of a culinary queen.
I am taken aback by the stunning Cotswold Stone mansion. Adorned for Christmas. Wreath on the door. Christmas tree as you enter and greeted by the welcoming voice of Paulina.
The interiors is your Cotswold home-from-home with a modern twist.
We were swiftly show to the fire lit lounge where we perused two menus “ Tasting “ and “ Main”.
Both of us opted for main menu. To begin, the chef gave us a mixture of appetisers from the main which was so delicious. Jalapeño and cheddar croquettes. A selection of hams and a crisp potato terrine.
Cara opted for pinot noir, which Paulina kept topped up and I tried one of the mocktails. Watermelon soda… with cucumber refreshingly delicious.
“Beautiful service, a Cotswold mansion without pretension, delicious food, and we were so full I honestly can say I could possibly not eat till Christmas”

We were then taken to our table …. Beautiful farmhouse tables for those with a bigger party.. we had a cosy table by the window. Lovely service and then our choices of main menu food arrived.
Cara had pig cheek with pear and sauccison. I had soufflé. The pig cheek especially delicious.
For main, we ordered lamb and beef wellington. However, venison and lamb arrived. But what a wonderful accident! The Cornbury pork venison loin was beautifully cooked, presented and in Cara’s opinion the perfect combination of tastes, with its parsnip and green peppercorn.
The team, majorly apologetic at the mix up in orders, then brought us the beef wellington too.
Lamb perfectly cooked. Beef wellington, at £34, I wouldn’t say had the wow factor but the venison, is a must if you want the culinary delight that it gave us.
Lastly buy by no means least the desserts.
If you visit Painswick Hotel for desserts alone you will not be disappointed.
The tarte tartin, possibly the best I have ever eaten. The dark chocolate cremieux was an explosion of pedro nut and a thin rice- cake on top.
Beautiful service, a Cotswold mansion without pretension, delicious food, and we were so full I honestly can say I could possibly not eat till Christmas.
