The Stroud Local History Society will host an illustrated talk by historian Marion Hearfield on Thursday 14th May 2026, offering a detailed exploration of the origins and early development of Stroud’s Subscription Rooms, one of the town’s most significant civic and cultural buildings.
Taking place at St Laurence Church Hall, Stroud (GL5 1JL), the event will open at 7.00pm for tea, coffee, and informal discussion, with the talk beginning at 7.30pm.
Marion Hearfield’s presentation, The Origins of Stroud’s Subscription Rooms (1832–1950s), will trace the establishment of the Subscription Rooms in the early 19th century and follow their evolution through to the mid-20th century. Drawing on original archival materials, the talk highlights both the social ambitions behind the building’s creation and the rich historical record preserved in local collections.
A particular feature of the talk will be Hearfield’s reflections on working with original documents, offering insight into the process of historical research and the unexpected discoveries that can emerge from archival work.
The Subscription Rooms themselves remain a central landmark in Stroud’s cultural life, and this talk provides an opportunity to better understand their origins and changing role within the community over time.
Tickets are available at £2.50 for members and £4 for non-members, payable in cash on the door. Entry is free for students with valid ID, although advance booking is still required.
