Drivers in the west country are being advised the westbound M4 Prince of Wales Bridge has closed for emergency repairs and is not expected to re-open before 6am tomorrow morning (Monday 23 September).
National Highways has attempted to make repairs to the carriageway overnight and into today but the work has been hampered by spells of torrential rain. The repairs will now take place later today and overnight with a window of better weather expected.
Drivers planning to use the westbound M4 bridge are advised to use the alternative westbound M48 Severn Bridge route into South Wales instead but should check traffic conditions before setting out on journeys as congestion is likely on routes approaching both bridges including along the M4, M5 and M49.
Live traffic information is always available at www.trafficengland.com or from National Highways’ 24-7 customer contact centre at 0300 123 5000. Updates will also be posted to @HighwaysSWest and @2SevernBridges – National Highways’ regional feeds on X.
The emergency work is separate to planned repairs and maintenance which is taking place along the Prince of Wales Bridge. More details of that work is available here: https://nationalhighways.co.uk/our-roads/south-west/m4-prince-of-wales-bridge-resurfacing/
