South Gloucestershire and Stroud College (SGS) is proud to be joining global efforts to support Ukraine with a fundraising campaign that aims to raise £10,000 for families and communities impacted by the crisis.

The College has chosen to work with the Red Cross based in Ukraine and will focus on securing cash donations that can be used in a flexible manner to aid the work being undertaken on the ground.

Fundraising activities will take place over the coming weeks with departments launching sponsored silences, car washes, cake stalls, face painting, bag packing at supermarkets and many more endeavours to ensure the desired target is achieved.

SGS are also holding ‘The Great Cake Sale and Ukraine Question and Answer Sessions’ at each of its main campuses in Stroud and Bristol this week.

All staff and learners are being encouraged to bake cakes to sell with proceeds going towards the campaign. Additionally, there will be briefing sessions with presentations and the opportunity to ask questions about what is currently happening in Ukraine. Guest speakers are Charles Martell who currently has family out in Kyiv, a Ukrainian learner studying at SGS, plus various SGS tutors.

SGS recognises that many in the community will be affected in different ways by this crisis and feelings of anxiety and concern are going to be at a level that may not have been experienced before. Students and staff are able to access ongoing confidential support through the SGS Wellbeing Service and Counselling Service.

Sara-Jane Watkins, SGS College Principal, commented: “Our thoughts are with all those who have been displaced by the Russian military invasion of Ukraine and all those who suffer the injustice of war. I am proud that our strong, caring and inclusive community of staff and students have come together to support all those who have been affected. The excellent fundraising efforts of SGS College staff and students demonstrates the community spirit and focus that is bringing people together during such difficult times.”
