Shortwood 1 Cheltenham Saracens 0

Dan Gayner’s strike saw Shortwood win a tense derby clash against Cheltenham Saracens, writes Jim Cunneen.

Wood had the best of the early chances and Smith twice came close in the opening exchanges. Dan Gayner had a fine run and shot narrowly wide before former Shortwood striker Paul Holmes shot wide for the visitors.

Saracens lost ex-Wood defender Tunnicliff on 14 minutes. Shortwood opened the scoring on the cusp of the break. Byrnes’ corner saw Kent and Tryner manage to play the ball back across the box for the unmarked Dan Gayner to slot home.

After the break, Saracens’ Oakley was red-carded. Saracens through everything forward towards the end in an effort to salvage something, but
Wood took the points.

Shortwood: Thomas, Loveridge, Royer (Mace R 72), Byrnes, Tryner, Sabally (Price 88), Bowes (Molyneux 68), Kent, A Gayner (Duncan 84), Smith, D Gayner
