A brace from Dan Gayner and goals from Alex Gayner, Dom Kent and Travis Cooke, capped an impressive night for Marcus Foxwell’s Shortwood United at Meadowbank, writes Jim Cunneen.
Wood opened their account from the penalty spot on seven minutes when Dan Gayner stroked home after the impressive Elliot Martin had been chopped down. Danny Gayner banked his second from a Finlay Byrnes’ free-kick.
Wood scored their third after 39 minutes. Joe Williams and Jack Gardner worked the ball with a swift interchange of passes and Gardner’s low cross was perfect for Alex Gayner to arrive at the far post and shoot home.
Wood kept the pressure up and were rewarded after 52 minutes. Again the passing was fast and incisive. and Alex and Dan Gayner combined to set Kent free to run on and chip the keeper.
Brimscombe almost pulled one back, but Ollie Price cleared the ball off the line. Byrnes hit the bar from 20 yards, Alex Gayner had a header cleared before Wood scored their fifth, and best, goal with 12 minutes to go. Martin got away down the right and his cross fell to Cooke who hit an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net.
