Start Where You Are is an empowering and inclusive new beginner’s guide to running for women, written by award-winning ultra-runner, coach, and social justice advocate Sabrina Pace-Humphreys.
Challenging common misconceptions about running, this practical and motivating book is designed to take women from the couch to their first 5K — and beyond — with confidence, compassion, and joy.
Combining expert coaching advice with lived experience and community stories, Start Where You Are meets women exactly where they are. The book offers a ten-week programme rooted in self-compassion and empowerment, helping readers build physical strength, mental resilience, and lasting confidence. Alongside guidance on running technique and mindset, the book addresses essential and often overlooked topics including safety, menstruation, menopause, and mental health, making it a truly holistic guide to running and wellbeing.
Sabrina began running in 2009 as a way to manage postnatal depression. Nine years later, she completed the Marathon des Sables — a 250km multi-stage ultra-marathon across the Sahara Desert — becoming the eleventh British woman to finish the race. A mother of four and grandmother of three, Sabrina is now a UK Athletics–qualified Leader and Coach in Running Fitness, a qualified personal trainer, a community leader, and a motivational speaker.
She is the co-founder of Black Trail Runners and founder of Stroud Mums on the Run, and has helped hundreds of women take their first steps into running. Sabrina is also an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy, recognised for her work championing mental health, diversity, representation, and inclusion in sport.
Start Where You Are is a powerful reminder that running does not require a certain body, background, or starting point — just the courage to begin.
