Steve Cotterill takes a swipe at Forest Green boo boys

Forest Green boss Steve Cotterill has taken a thinly veiled swipe at a section of his own fans as his side failed to lay a glove on AFC Fylde as the home side ran out 3-0 winners on Saturday.

A number of fans voiced their disdain at Rovers’ display in Lancashire. Cotterill confronted the contingent at the final whistle.

Cotterill explained his exchange with the fans in his post-match synopsis with BBC Radio Gloucestershire’s Billy Hunt: “There was a little pocket, and I think it seems to be a very young generation, the boys come back to me on time-to-time, I think it is maybe the same few. I can’t have them singing bad things to them like ‘they are not very good’.”

Always ebullient, Cotterill believes the fans need to take stock after back-to-back relegations, with his side now rooted in the play-off places.

He added: “I don’t know where they would have been for the last couple of years, but this club hasn’t been in a very good place for a couple of years, but it hasn’t done bad this year.”

The former Cheltenham Town and Bristol City boss was steadfast in his support of his players, who remain anchored in third-place, he added: “We can have off-games from time-to-time and that is going to happen. I know what the players are like and I know what they have given to the club and what they continue to do for the club. I will always stand onboard with the lads; I will always do that.”
