Stroud Camera Club: Open competition winning images

Simon Caplan judged Stroud Camera Club’s second Open competition and said not everyone would be happy with their scores because judging is subjective and not objective, so different scores may be received from different judges.

As usual the evening elicited much comment from members both on the evening and afterwards on the club’s Facebook group. One long-standing member commented: “It was good to see so many entries last night. In my opinion the judge was brutal but spot on with his critique even though I probably had my lowest score on one image ever. . . as did a few more of our ‘seasoned’ members. It was good to see scores from some of the less experienced members outperforming some of our highflyers!”

Other comments included: “A great night to learn from the judge’s comments.”

“My learning – shaping light, use a tripod and simply enjoy my photography – I personally think Simon was a brilliant judge, despite scoring a 9”

Simon also selected his favourite images of the evening:

Judge’s choice – Trish Bloodworth, Wild pony jump (18)

Judge’s choice – Jeff Wilson, The Portrait (20)

Scores of 17 – Prints

Richard Atkinson – Reflected in steel

Nigel Bowsher – Sailor – Tall ships

Scores of 19 – Digital

Andy Harbin – Brixham Lido
