Stroud Farmers’ Market has been shortlisted as one of three finalists for the prestigious Farmers Market of the Year 2027 award, celebrating its outstanding contribution to local food, producers and the wider community.

Organised by the Farm Retail Association (FRA), the annual Farm Retail Awards recognise excellence across British farm retail. The Farmers Market of the Year category celebrates markets that champion local producers, create vibrant community destinations and connect shoppers with the people and businesses behind their food.

Stroud Farmers’ Market, which is run by Fresh-n-Local Markets, was launched in 1999 with just 13 stalls per month. It has since grown into a thriving weekly market featuring around 60 stalls, attracting strong local support as well as visitors from across the UK.

Gerb Gerbrands from Stroud Farmers’ Market said: “It was one of the hardest award applications I’ve ever had to do. An A-Level in markets.

“I’m a bit shy of awards mostly but the market deserves to be recognised for what it is; absolutely fantastic.

“All the glory goes to our wonderful farmers and food producers and our amazing customers!”

The judges praised the strength of this year’s finalists, highlighting their commitment to excellence, support for producers and clearly defined market identities. The shortlisted markets were also recognised for their high standards, effective management and ability to create thriving destinations while remaining true to their values.

The other finalists are Creake Abbey Farmers’ Market in Norfolk, which has championed local food and drink since 2005, and Local to Ludlow Producers’ Market in Shropshire, a grassroots Community Interest Company promoting food and drink sourced within 30 miles of Ludlow.

Ben Loughrey, Chair of the Farm Retail Association, said: “Our Farmers Market of the Year 2027 Finalists showcase the very best of local food and produce. Throughout the year, these markets give shoppers the chance to buy fresh seasonal food, meet the people who produce it and support local businesses.

“What makes farmers markets so special is the experience they create. They bring communities together, support local producers and give people a stronger connection to where their food comes from. We’re delighted to recognise a fantastic group of finalists who continue to champion local food.”

The national recognition comes as farmers markets continue to play an important role in supporting independent producers and strengthening local economies. For Stroud, the nomination reflects more than two decades of commitment from the market’s farmers, food producers, organisers and loyal customers.

The winner of the Farmers Market of the Year 2027 award will be announced as part of the Farm Retail Awards.
