Dear Editor,
Jamila Gavin’s recent MBE honour recognises her achievement as an author in the field of children’s literature and is very well deserved.
But perhaps less well-known is her passion, commitment and lifelong support generally for the Arts. She has given her time and energy to many artistic ventures over the years, holding volunteer positions in several festival organisations and arts funders.
Her current role as Trustee of Stroud Arts Festival – one of the oldest Arts Festivals in the UK – allows her to demonstrate her knowledge and love of classical music, theatre, visual art, dance and film and she is responsible for bringing many world-class performers to Stroud as well as celebrating local talent.
Her adaptation of Laurie Lee’s Cider with Rosie – a charming reading of extracts woven into the story of Laurie’s life and read by local people, toured the Stroud District and was a highlight of the Laurie Lee Centenary celebrations in 2014.
She’s now bringing inspirational ideas to the table in preparation for Stroud Arts Festival’s 80th year in 2026. Her passion unflagging. Her energy undimmed. Congratulations Jamila! Stroud is honoured to have you.
Jennifer Greenshields
