Stroud MP Simon Opher has accused the US of escalating an already volatile situation in the Middle East by striking Iran’s nuclear sites, while also fearing thousands more will die.
Speaking after confirmation that the United States attacked several nuclear sites in Iran overnight Saturday into Sunday, Dr Opher said: “The news overnight is appalling. The American attacks will not solve the problem and will actually undermine those who seek to reform and democratise the Iranian state.
“The Israeli government will be further emboldened to pursue their genocide against the Palestinian people. Thousands more will die needlessly.
“We need an immediate ceasefire across the region, and unhindered distribution of humanitarian aid. We should be trying to support the democratic, working class, non-partisan, and humanitarian forces in the region.
“War is not the way forwards.”
There is understood to have been no UK involvement in the action, which comes after Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Foreign Secretary David Lammy had pushed for a diplomatic solution rather than US action which could further destabilise the region.
