Stroud MP sees green shoots of recovery

One of the sentiments that I hear most often is that nothing works properly anymore. From roads and transport, through schools, hospitals, and social care, to defence and home security, people see things failing and many of the basics society needs are missing.

That’s why the new government is focusing on delivery. Not only does the country deserve better, but it’s a key part in rebuilding our politics. We have to be seen to deliver: more and better housing, cheaper, reliable energy, lower NHS waiting times, an effective justice system, safer streets, job security and better pay, bus services we can rely on and roads that are safe to drive on – none of these feel like an unreasonable expectation.

We always tend to focus on immediate problems, but we have to take steps to protect ourselves from the effects of climate change. That means setting a global example and eschewing ‘whataboutism’. We have to act. And we need more people to have more money in their pockets, and for them to feel secure enough to spend it and help boost the economy.

It’s all about finding answers, looking for practical solutions, making things work properly again.

As a doctor I always try to find answers, and, where necessary, think creatively about the best treatment for my patients. Often the solutions involve trying to help people get a few more of the basics in their lives right – diet, exercise, socialising, and so on.

Now, as a politician, I find myself in a similar situation. The government is beginning to address head on some of the things that aren’t working. We are also tackling some of the underlying causes, because if we don’t do that, the problems will only get worse. With a fairer society we will all do better.

Looking at our communities as we approach Christmas, I believe this even more. We are very early in a process of national recovery. I don’t think there’s a choice here.

For all our sakes, we have to make this work.
