Stroud residents urged to speak up before big planning decisions are made

Residents, businesses and community organisations across Stroud district are being urged to have their say as work begins on a new Local Plan that will shape where homes, jobs and infrastructure are delivered over the next 15 to 20 years.

The council has launched an early public consultation, running from 29 June to 9 August 2026, inviting people to help identify the district’s biggest challenges, priorities and opportunities before detailed proposals are developed.

While no decisions have been made on where future development will take place, the council says local feedback at this stage will play an important role in shaping the direction of the new plan.

The consultation comes as the government requires the district to plan for at least 846 new homes every year, alongside employment opportunities, transport improvements, community facilities and environmental enhancements.

Council Leader Chloe Turner said the authority would prioritise brownfield land wherever possible while taking account of natural constraints, including flood risk and the Cotswold National Landscape.

“This early consultation is about identifying our shared priorities and agreeing the principles that should guide future development,” she said. “We want to hear from as many people as possible so local views help inform the plan from the very beginning.”

The Local Plan will set out how growth can be balanced with protecting the district’s environment, supporting local communities and ensuring the right infrastructure is delivered alongside new development.

Following the current consultation, the council will continue gathering evidence and preparing options before launching further public consultation next year.

Consultation details

  • Opens: Monday 29 June 2026
  • Closes: Sunday 9 August 2026 at 11pm

Residents, businesses, community groups and stakeholders are encouraged to take part and share the consultation with others to ensure as many voices as possible contribute to shaping the future of Stroud district.
