By Simon Taylor, Stroud Wine Company
There’s one fundamental myth repeated by pretty much everyone when talking about wine.
Usually, it will start with a genial conversation about what a great time was had while on holiday or a work trip abroad and just how fantastic the culture, food and of course the wine was in said country. Then inevitably, the myth makes an appearance; usually expressed with a conspiratorial nod and a wink. “Of course, ‘they’ keep all the good stuff for themselves!” The thing is, ‘they’ don’t. ‘They’ sell the good stuff to independent wine merchants like us.
It’s no secret that supermarkets, chain stores and online-only wine merchants buy a lot of wine. With mass production comes an inevitable compromise on quality; of the grapes themselves to how they are treated (pesticides, mechanical harvesting, additives).
However independent wine merchants are different, the focus is on smaller, more ‘hands on’ wine making from producers who care about the wine they make and their environmental impact upon the land.
Instead of mass-produced monoculture, the focus is on biodiversity. Here at Stroud Wine Company, we’ve met many of the winemakers and vineyard owners who have shared their knowledge, history and passion for wine with us so we in turn can share it with our customers.
Through our new Stroud Times column, we won’t be ‘keeping all the good stuff for ourselves’, we’re delighted to be sharing great wine stories, recommendations and reviews with you; we’ll feature everything from great value easy drinking cheeky midweekers to the ‘super serious heavy hitters.
Cheers!
