Nothing beats a good burger, and that’s certainly true of two frozen venison burgers I picked up from Country Quality Meat in Nailsworth recently.
I defrosted the burgers in the fridge and after searching online for the best ways to cook them, I settled on heating a small amount of vegetable oil in a frying pan at the highest temperature and searing the burgers for two minutes on each side, then letting them rest for two minutes. I put a square of mozzarella cheese on each burger halfway through cooking, so it melted nicely.

Two ciabatta rolls were warmed in the oven to crisp them up and sliced in half. I added a bed of salad and a dab of Caesar Salad Dressing, then popped in the burgers. The taste was fantastic, and the warm rolls added to the experience – a quick and easy way to make a filling meal. Venison has a distinctive taste compared with beef, and have the benefit of being leaner, with less saturated fat.
A pack of five frozen venison burgers costs £6.25 – £1.25 each and are gluten free, and are made on site at the butchers in Old Market. Owner of Country Quality Meats, Paul Dowdeswell, believes venison is an affordable alternative to beef and lamb: Once priced similarly to beef and lamb, venison has now become considerably cheaper, making it an increasingly popular alternative for families and food lovers.

“A lot of people use venison mince and diced venison as an alternative to beef, and the feedback is very positive.
“Many customers are substituting venison loins for expensive beef steak dishes. Venison is proving that you don’t have to compromise on quality to get a great meal, even in the current climate of rising food prices.”
