The penultimate round of The Lake Triathlon Series delivered an electric evening of multi-sport action at Cromhall Quarry, as a capacity field produced course records, stunning breakthrough performances, and a dramatic reshuffle at the top of the series championship under the light of the solar eclipse.
In the men’s race, Matt Hann proved why he was the fastest man on paper by storming to outright victory in a blistering 1:00:40, slicing over a minute off his previous benchmark from Race 3. However, the revelation of the evening came from 16-year-old junior sensation Tom Board, who produced a breathtaking display across all three disciplines to claim second place overall in 1:02:39. Meanwhile, Race 2 winner Matthew Peters executed a perfectly measured race, finishing third among the men and fourth overall.
The women’s race witnessed arguably the most remarkable performance of the entire summer courtesy of Ellie Hunter. Having won on debut in Race 2, Hunter returned with devastating speed to stop the clock at 1:05:52, slashing nearly five minutes off her previous quarry effort to take outright female victory and an astonishing third place overall among 122 competitors. She was pushed by another emerging young star, 18-year-old Molly Smith, who took second female in 1:10:02, while series leader Penny Guess completed the podium, improving on her winning time from the previous round.

Race 4 has blown the men’s title fight wide open with substantial movement across the top ten. Capitalising on the absence of previous leader Harry Bunting, Matthew Peters vaulted two places to take the top spot. Edward Bamford made one of the biggest moves at the sharp end, climbing three places into third while Miguel Alvarez advanced into fourth, narrowly edging ahead of the absent Dominic Middleton-Frith. Further down the order, Kevin Joint jumped five places to break into the top ten and race winner Matt Hann surged up nine spots into eighth. Veteran Steve Payne and James Tarver both gained significant ground to sit on the cusp of the top ten in 11th and 12th, while Tomas Teslicka produced one of the biggest climbs of the night, leaping nearly 40 places into the top 20.
In the women’s championship, Penny Guess further tightened her grip at the top, maintaining an unblemished hold on first place across all four rounds. Behind her, the podium chase remains finely poised as Ella Clark and Hannah Asbridge cemented second and third respectively with composed top-20 finishes. Sally Yu held onto fourth to keep the pressure firmly on the podium places, while Ellie Hunter’s back-to-back victories have propelled her straight into sixth despite racing only twice. Hannah Bizoumis and India Rawlin also made notable strides to solidify top-ten berths ahead of the finale.
Beyond the points race, the evening once again celebrated the inclusive community spirit of The Lake, with personal bests and first-time finishes cheered home with equal passion. All eyes now turn to Saturday, 12th September for the Grand Series Finale at The Lake. Switching to an early morning start, the final round promises a thrilling climax as Matthew Peters, Harry Bunting, and Edward Bamford settle the men’s three-way title duel, while Penny Guess looks to put the finishing touches on a dominant women’s championship campaign.
