Tom Knowles is leaving Forest Green Rovers after a costly contract mix-up left the club powerless to stop his exit.
The club believed an extension option had been activated following the conclusion of the season. However, a legacy administrative error has since revealed that the extension clause was not valid, meaning Knowles will depart as a free agent at the end of his contract.
A club spokesperson said: “The club can today confirm that Tom Knowles will leave FGR at the end of his current contract on the 30th June.
“We believed an option had been triggered on Tom’s contract following the conclusion of the season.
“However, due to a legacy administrative error, this extension was not an option, meaning Tom will leave the club.
“Unfortunately, Tom has decided to look at other opportunities and has played his last game in the FGR colours.
“As a much-loved player and fan favourite, we are gutted to share this news.
“Tom flourished last season under Robbie, scoring 13 goals with 7 assists. He also won both the fans’ player of the year and goal of the year awards.
“We wish Knowlesy nothing but the best for the future, and we welcome him back at The New Lawn whenever he wants.”
Knowles scored 10 goals in 45 National League games this season, having joined the club from Walsall in 2024.
