Stroud District Council is taking the next major step in the regeneration of Brimscombe Port by launching a new procurement process to find a developer partner for the landmark site.
Following the withdrawal of the previous developer earlier this year, the council commissioned a soft market testing exercise to gauge interest in the site. It received responses from a range of developers with strong track records in delivering complex, sustainable, and community-focused regeneration schemes.
Cllr Chloe Turner, Leader of the Council, said: “The feedback we’ve received from interested developers confirmed the support for our vision of a residential-led canal-side development, including affordable housing, alongside flexible commercial and community spaces. We are excited about the next steps in this project.”
The council has already invested more than £2.4 million to de-risk the site, including securing planning permission, demolishing buildings, and acquiring key land. A further £3.5 million in public investment is earmarked for infrastructure works, supported by Homes England and other funding partners.
The Strategy and Resources Committee has approved a Competitive Flexible procurement procedure, designed to attract a wide range of bidders and enable meaningful dialogue to ensure the best outcomes for the district. A refreshed Project Board, including councillors and community representatives, will oversee the process.
Cllr Chloe Turner, continued: “Working with the local community will be vital to the success of the project: Whilst the new procurement process is happening, we are exploring temporary uses for the site to bring benefits to the local community until redevelopment begins.”
Brimscombe Port remains a flagship regeneration project for the district, promising high sustainability standards, social value, and a vibrant new neighbourhood rooted in local heritage.
