Harpist Morwenna Louttit-Vermaat performed Christmas carols and seasonal songs this morning to mark the rising of the sun on the winter solstice at Selsley Common.

Despite the sun not putting in an appearance, a number of people set their alarms early, made flasks of hot drinks and donned warm clothes to listen to the performance.

The official time of the sunrise was 8.13am, though thick cloud denied even the faintest glimpse of pink or orange in the sky.

Morwenna has performed at the summer and winter solstice for around five years and today’s performance included renditions of Greensleeves and We Wish You a Merry Christmas amongst other tunes.

Along with her husband Creag, the couple run Hands On Harps based in Stroud.
