What is the bright light near the moon this evening?

If you look into the night sky this evening, you might well see a bright light above and to the right of the moon.

From December 30^th to January 5^th the brightest visible planets will be Venus (mag -4.5) and Saturn (mag 1.1).

The waxing crescent moon appeared between Venus and Saturn for around two hours after sunset this evening. Stroud Times photojournalist Matt Bigwood took this photo at around 5.30pm today using a Sony A9 camera and 200-600mm zoom lens with an exposure of ¼ second at f/6.3 at a focal length of 300mm.

The Quadrantid meteor shower should also be visible to sky gazers this evening, the best time to view them is said to be just before dawn.
