What’s on in Stroud this week: 23 – 29 June

Summer is in full swing, with plenty of events taking place in the Five Valleys and beyond this week, from beer festivals to country shows, barbecues and butterfly hunts.

Special mention to Stroud Pride, which kicks off in town on Saturday with a march around town and picnic in Bank Gardens, with up to 500 expected to attend.

Regular and one off events

The Long Table in Brimscombe hosts its weekly summer Friday night barbecue, promising a relaxed evening of family favourites. The event includes music, with a bar that remains open until late.

Horns Road’s popular local hostelry hosts the summer edition of its regular acoustic Irish folk music night. Free entry, all welcome.

Stroud Valleys Project butterfly expert Chris Wiltshire leads a walk around Rodborough Common in search of a range of butterflies including the recently reintroduced Large Blue. The organisers hope that participants might have opportunities to see the impressive Dark Green Fritillary and Marbled White, along with more common species such as Meadow Brown and Ringlet.

The Stroud Pride March and Picnic in the Park take place around town, with the Pride March meeting in Bank Gardens at 11am, returning for a picnic in the gardens at 12 noon. The Pride picnic attracts around 500 each year, with stalls, information stands and entertainment.

Brimscombe and Thrupp FC, aka the Lilywhites, throw their first beer festival at their home ground, The Meadow in Brimscombe. The event will offer a variety of drinks, including locally brewed beer and cider, as well as hot and cold food and music from local DJs.

The Stroud Society of Model Engineers invites train enthusiasts to join their June running of the Stratford Park Miniature Railway. The 850ft, 5″ and 3.5″ gauge track was constructed by volunteers in the late-1970s and early-1980s and riders pass over hand-built bridges and through a tunnel behind one of the society members’ miniature engines.

Continuing this week

Local painter Ruth Batham’s exhibition at Rough Hands Coffee in the Five Valleys shopping centre draws to a close this week. The title of the show – ‘She Says Alot of Things’ – is taken from the song Rough Hands by Canadian post-hardcore band Alexisonfire, from which the cafe takes its name.

Further afield

The two-day Cotswold country show has been running since 1989, covering more than 40 acres of Cirencester Park. The show promises hundreds of attractions and tens of thousands of visitors over the weekend, with handy vehicle access off the A419.
