Why Stroud MP voted to cut winter fuel payment for millions of pensioners

Stroud MP Dr Simon Opher has backed Labour’s decision to cut to the winter fuel payment after a Conservative motion to block it failed to pass the House of Commons.

Some 348 MPs backed the government’s plan to scrap the annual payment for 10 million pensioners in a vote in the Commons yesterday, while 228 supported the opposition motion.

Just one Labour MP – Jon Trickett – voted against the government, while 53 Labour MPs abstained.

Dr Opher said: “Yesterday afternoon I voted with the government to introduce means testing on the Winter Fuel Payment (WFP).

“It was a universal benefit introduced by the last Labour government to solve a particular issue. Today, our government faces a host of other problems, not the least of which is the financial black hole left by the Tories. This is a real and urgent problem that we cannot wish away.

“The WFP goes to many people who really do not need it. But I am very aware that it is essential for many others.

“I made my concerns about the clear ever since the policy was first announced, especially about the cut off point, and the fact that there was no phasing or tapering for those just above the threshold.

“I have been in more or less constant discussion with ministers and others over the last few days.  As a result, my understanding is that,  ahead of the budget, my primary concerns will be addressed – hence my support yesterday.

“We continue to need a comprehensive strategy to tackle fuel poverty, health inequality and low incomes among older people.  I will press for that, and to ensure that the implementation of the policy does indeed reflect the substantive nature of the assurances I have been given.

“I support the government’s work sorting out the mess left by the Tories. It has to be done. But I will continue to make sure that those who really need our support get the protections and respect they deserve.”
