A shop in Stroud has been ordered to close temporarily following an investigation by police and Trading Standards into the sale of illegal tobacco and vapes.

The Green Shop on the High Street was issued with a two-month closure order on Thursday, July 24.

The case for the closure order was brought before Cheltenham Magistrates’ Court by Solace, a partnership between the police and six local authorities within the county, and with support from Trading Standards.

It follows a number of inspections and test purchase operations conducted by Trading Standards since November 2024. These operations, which were supported by Stroud Neighbourhood Policing Team, resulted in illegal tobacco and vapes being seized on each visit.

Following further reports and concerns raised by members of the public, police took the decision to pursue the closure order.

Magistrates granted the closure order, deeming it necessary to prevent the behaviour, nuisance or disorder from continuing, occurring or recurring at the address.

It means the shop cannot trade and must remain closed until 23 September 2025.

The order prevents anyone from entering the property except for the owner and emergency services.

Failure to comply with the order is a criminal offence which could result in imprisonment for up to three months, a fine, or both.

Solace officer for Stroud, Tanya Wilson, said: “We have worked hard with our partners and Trading Standards to successfully secure this closure order.

“It sends a clear message that the sale of illicit tobacco, cigarettes, and vapes will not be tolerated in our town.

“These products pose significant health risks to people in our communities, undermine legitimate businesses, and are often linked to wider criminal activity. We could encourage anyone with any concerns about issues in the community to report it to us.”
