Richard Brown reviews Chalfest 2026: community at its very best

Chalfest 2026 once again demonstrated why it has become one of Gloucestershire’s most cherished festivals. It may not be the biggest event on the calendar, but that is precisely where its appeal lies. By combining nationally recognised artists with genuine community spirit, Chalfest delivers an experience that feels welcoming, inclusive and unmistakably local.

The weather could hardly have been better. Sunshine bathed the festival throughout the weekend, yet without the oppressive temperatures of recent days, creating ideal conditions for families, music lovers and performers alike.

From the generous residents’ discount, which ensures local people remain at the heart of the festival, to the wealth of family entertainment, children’s activities, comedy, artisan traders and outstanding street food, there was something to appeal to every visitor. The food offering was particularly impressive, with an excellent range of high-quality vendors. Meanwhile, the ever-popular Chalford Hill Primary School tea and cake tent remained a much-loved reminder that Chalfest is every bit as much about community as it is about music.

The musical line-up perfectly captured the festival’s ethos, celebrating both local talent and internationally recognised performers. Home-grown favourites including The Patsy Gamble Blues Collective and Chalford Silver Band shared the bill with headline acts such as Heather Small, whose powerful rendition of Search for the Hero provided one of the weekend’s standout moments. Tinchy Stryder brought chart-topping energy to the Main Stage, while Chesney Hawkes had thousands singing along to The One and Only. Festival-goers were also treated to a spectacular Madonna tribute show, complete with iconic hits, dazzling costumes and infectious 80s energy that kept the crowd dancing from beginning to end. Add Charlie Hedges, The Britpop Boys, Keith Allen and the Mushroom Junctionaires, Benny Page, Discoliscious and dozens more performers across multiple stages, and the result was a programme of exceptional depth and variety.

Beyond the music, Chalfest celebrated creativity in all its forms. The Victoria Works tent proved to be a wonderful addition, with visitors of all ages enjoying partner portrait sessions and leaving with unique, hand-drawn keepsakes of the weekend.

Perhaps the festival’s greatest achievement, however, was its atmosphere. Everywhere you looked there was warmth, laughter and genuine friendliness. Children danced freely, neighbours caught up with one another, visitors were made to feel instantly welcome and strangers became friends. It is a rare festival where kindness feels every bit as important as the entertainment itself.

None of this would be possible without the extraordinary team of volunteers. Their enthusiasm, generosity and tireless commitment underpin every aspect of Chalfest. They do far more than simply help run the festival – they embody everything it stands for.

Congratulations are due to the organising committee, volunteers, performers, sponsors and everyone who contributed to another outstanding weekend. Chalfest continues to prove that it is possible to attract world-class entertainment while remaining firmly rooted in the community that created it.

Roll on Chalfest 2027.
