Come and watch the mbira in action

Stroud’s community music space is welcoming two players of an unusual instrument this week, writes Marianne Sweet.

Stroud Seatery is based in the Cornhill Marketplace every Wednesday from 11am-2pm. It often hosts musicians and singers to entertain people as they enjoy their lunch, a drink, or just a few minutes’ break from the working day.

This Wednesday (June 14) from 11.15am, Fred Miller and Andy Fowler will each be playing an mbira, sometimes referred to as a thumb piano. Andy is an expert teacher of the African instrument and is passionate about sharing his knowledge with others.

Recent Seatery sessions have seen performances from Stroud Ukes and folk duo Charlie’s Angels, as well as autoharp, guitar and ukelele players. Future bookings include the popular Age UK Supertroupers choir.

The Seatery will run until around September and is supported by Stroud Town Council and the Chamber of Trade, with thanks to Stroud District Council. Follow its Facebook page (Stroud Seatery) to find out what’s on or email council@stroudtown.gov.uk
