Brimscombe & Thrupp FC has paid tribute to their much-loved vice president and former chairman Clive Baker, who has died following a short illness.
Club chairman Neil Long led the tributes: “It is with very heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of our club Vice President and former Chairman, Clive Baker, following a short battle with cancer.
“Clive was not only Vice President and Chairman, but in his early years also Manager of the First Team, where he played a pivotal role in setting the club on its upward journey through the leagues. Shortly after management, he stepped into the role of Chairman, a position he would make his own, serving with unwavering dedication and passion, always giving his time generously and leading with integrity. He was a constant presence at the club, often in the company of the daily gang – a scene not unlike Last of the Summer Wine – usually sharing laughter, stories, and the occasional bit of mischief.
“During his tenure, the club rose from the Northern Senior League to the Hellenic Premier League. Along the way, Clive oversaw many significant developments, including the extended clubhouse, a new stand, and the installation of floodlights – milestones that helped shape the club into what it is today. His vision, hard work, and loyalty will always be remembered with gratitude.
“Beyond his leadership, Clive was a true friend to many. His warmth, kindness, and enthusiasm touched countless lives both on and off the field. He enjoyed nothing more than a John Smith’s or, when the beer became a bit too much, his favourite tipple – a Bacardi and Coke.
“Our thoughts are with Clive’s family and friends at this difficult time. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.”
Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
Clive’s impact was also remembered fondly by former players, colleagues, and friends from across the local football community.

- Karl Nash, former Lilywhite and now Stonehouse coach, added: “Absolutely gutted, what a bloody great man he was!
