Thirty years after making his first-class debut for the Club, Gloucestershire Cricket is delighted to announce the appointment of former bowler Jon Lewis as its new Director of Cricket.

In this important role, Jon will be responsible for shaping and delivering a unified cricketing vision that supports the Club’s long-term strategic goals.

He will oversee the performance structure across the Men’s and Women’s teams as well as the pathway programmes, ensuring alignment in playing philosophy, coaching approach, and player development throughout Gloucestershire Cricket.

Jon will lead and integrate all performance programmes to create a cohesive and collaborative environment, ensuring consistency in playing style, coaching methodology and performance standards across every level of Gloucestershire Cricket. He will also work closely with the Executive team to embed cricketing excellence at the heart of the Club’s overall vision and direction.

On his return to the Club, Lewis said: “I’m really excited. It’s a big job and there’s lots to do. We’ve got some things that are really pressing and some that are exciting in the long term too.

“It’s a place that has a really special meaning for me. It created a lot of opportunities for me to become a better player, and hopefully I can give people the same opportunities that I had here.

“I need to get to know how everything works properly, get behind the scenes and make sure everyone’s working together.

“That unity has always been part of the Gloucestershire DNA – the teamwork and people working together. I think that’s really important, as is setting high standards and making sure the standards of play, training, and the way we do things every day are really set in stone.”

On Lewis’ selection, Gloucestershire Cricket Chair Peter Matthews said: “We’re delighted to welcome Jon back to the Club in the important role of Director of Cricket. His responsibilities will cover all areas of cricket, including working closely with Mark Alleyne in the men’s game, the women’s game – including the imminent appointment of a new women’s head coach – as well overseeing our talent pathway, cricket operations, and the Club’s science and medicine department.

“Jon was appointed following a rigorous recruitment process with some very high-calibre candidates, and he did exceptionally well to secure the role.

“He starts today [Wednesday], and the plan is to run subsequent Members’ meetings with him, Mark, the new women’s head coach, and our president-elect, David Graveney, giving people the chance to ask questions of our new team.

“Our cricket ambitions are very clear: compete in Division One red-ball cricket, continue to be competitive in white-ball cricket, achieve Tier 1 status for our women’s team and produce a stream of homegrown players with the aim of supplying England players at all age groups.

“We wish Jon every success in his new role and look forward to seeing what he can achieve in the coming years.”

Lewis is one of the most decorated players in Gloucestershire’s history. A key member of the dominant white-ball side of the 90s and 00s, the former seamer played an instrumental role in the Club’s golden era of white-ball success alongside players like Jack Russell and Mark Alleyne.

On the international stage, Jon represented England in Test, ODI and T20 International cricket, becoming only the third Gloucestershire player to feature for England in a Cricket World Cup when he was selected for the 2007 tournament.

His international highlights include a memorable IT20 debut, where he dismissed four of Australia’s finest – Andrew Symonds, Michael Clarke, Ricky Ponting and Damien Martyn – in what was a record victory for England at the time. In 2006, he joined legends Jessop, Hammond and Grace as Gloucestershire players to have represented England at Test level.

Since retiring from professional cricket in 2013, Jon has built an illustrious coaching career within the England setup. His previous roles include serving as Young Lions Head Coach, as England Men’s Fast Bowling Coach and most recently, leading the England Women’s team as Head Coach.

A passionate advocate for the women’s game, Jon also made history in 2023 when he was appointed Head Coach of the UP Warriorz in the inaugural Women’s Premier League in India. Throughout his two seasons at the franchise, Jon worked with esteemed international players such as Alyssa Healy, Deepti Sharma and Sophie Ecclestone.

During the 2025 season, Jon served as a consultant coach for Gloucestershire, working closely with both the men’s and women’s teams. He shared his extensive experience and insights, helping players and coaches alike to develop their skills and understanding of the game.
