Dr Simon Opher MP: new renters’ rights reforms to benefit tenants across Stroud district

MOST READ

As political headlines continue to dominate the national conversation, local residents remain focused on the issues that affect their everyday lives — including the security and affordability of housing.

The government’s new Renters’ Rights Act is now beginning to transform the private rental market, giving tenants across the Stroud district greater protection, stability and fairness.

One of the most significant reforms is the abolition of Section 21 “no-fault” evictions. Previously, landlords could require tenants to leave without providing a reason, creating uncertainty for many renters, particularly families and younger people. Under the new system, landlords must now provide a valid legal ground before ending a tenancy.

The legislation also limits rent increases to once per year and requires landlords to give tenants at least two months’ notice. Importantly, renters will be able to challenge unreasonable increases through a tribunal process without fear of retaliatory eviction.

The Act further introduces rolling tenancies in place of fixed-term contracts, giving tenants greater flexibility while enabling them to remain in their homes for the long term. Additional measures strengthen housing standards and improve protections for tenants with children, tenants receiving benefits, and those wishing to keep pets.

These reforms represent the biggest change to renters’ rights in a generation. They will help provide greater security and peace of mind for thousands of tenants across the Stroud district, while also supporting a fairer and more stable rental market.
