I attended today’s cattle release event onto the common and wanted to raise some concerns regarding the lack of visible health and safety measures for the large crowds gathered to watch the cattle parade through the centre of Minchinhampton.
While I appreciate that this is a longstanding tradition enjoyed by many residents and visitors, I was genuinely concerned that the event appeared to have little or no crowd management in place despite the increasing number of attendees each year.
In particular, there were large numbers of school children lining the streets, and several people were standing directly in the cattle’s path. I heard repeated shouts from worried bystanders telling people to move out of the way as the cattle approached. At one point, I also witnessed a parent attempting to allow a toddler to pat one of the cows on the nose while standing very close to the moving animals.
Given the size and unpredictability of cattle, this felt like an accident waiting to happen. Fortunately, nobody appeared to be injured today, but I believe the risk to public safety was significant.
Considering the growing popularity of the event, I would urge the organisers to review the current arrangements and consider implementing more visible safety measures in future years. These could include temporary barriers or designated viewing areas, stewards or marshals along the route, clear public safety announcements before the parade begins, better separation between spectators and the cattle and specific guidance for families with young children.
I am raising this matter in the hope that future events can remain enjoyable while also ensuring the safety of both the public and the animals.
