What’s on in Stroud this week: 8 – 14 June

There’s plenty to see and do in and around Stroud this week, with SITE Festival kicking off two weekends of open studios and associated events, Woodchester Lion Hunt taking place around the village and a celebration of refugee week at Hill House in Amberley.

Plus, West Rugger’s Green hosts a charcoal-making day, community fetes take place at Longfield Hospice and in King’s Stanley, and a bit further afield the Three Counties Show brings country pursuits to Malvern throughout the weekend.

Find out more in our regular look at things coming up in Stroud and the wider district.

Regular and one off events

This special day-long hands-on workshop at West Rugger’s Green above Nailsworth offers the chance to learn the traditional art of charcoal making. Participants will learn how a traditional ring kiln is used to make charcoal, experiencing every step of the process, from emptying and grading charcoal, to lighting and tending it.

The Longfield Hospice team throw open their doors for a special summer fête, with food and drinks, artisan stalls, fun, games and live music throughout the day. Plus, the fête serves as the starting and finishing point for the popular sponsored Walk for Longfield.

Woodchester Lion Hunt takes on a new lease of life this year, with organisers promising a trail of ten living, breathing and very friendly lions prowling around the village. The event is centred around a fair at Woodchester Endowed Primary School featuring two bouncy castles, a barbecue, a bar, country dancing, face-painting, a raffle, tombola, and games including stomp-rocket wanging and beat the goalie.

Sanctuary Breaks and Stroud District Together With Refugees mark the start of Refugee Week with an annual fundraiser in gardens of Hill House in Amberley, including folk dance and live music from Ukraine, Palestine, Malaysia, Scotland and the Cotswolds, with a special performance from Stroud’s own Boss Morris. The event also includes an artist-led garden treasure trail, homemade Palestinian food, Hill House apple juice and a cèilidh.

Anglo – French folksters Topette return to the Lansdown Hall as part of a tour to mark the release of their fifth album, Tazon. The band play acoustic dance music, designed for French balfolk dance, but just as good for listening or less structured dancing.

King’s Stanley Village Fete returns to the Marling Playing Field, this year with a peace-loving flower power theme including a parade, flower crown making and bake off. Plus live music and entertainment, flower crown making and crafts, stalls and games, a barbecue, bar and tea and cake and a dog show.

Beginning this week

SITE Festival returns over two June weekends, with more than 60 artists opening their studio doors at 38 locations across the Stroud Valleys. The organisers have laid out the openings along six routes starting in central Stroud and stretching as far as Wotton-under-Edge, Stonehouse and Chalford

Further afield

This annual celebration of rural life in Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire has been taking place at the Three Counties Showground in Malvern for more than 65 years. Visitors can expect a range of countryside-inspired to see and do, from an on-site food and drink festival to parachute displays, tractor parades and a ‘Grand Parade’ of competing livestock.
