A couple who “offered sexual services” so they could drug men and steal from them have each been jailed for 17 years. after two of their victims died.
Adina Mihai, 31, posed as a sex worker, and her partner Madalin Dumitru, 30, helped set up a profile online to arrange meetings with men paying for sex in their homes.
They admitted the manslaughter of two men and two further counts of administering poison.
The pair targeted men who had been seeking sexual services between August 2024 and July 2025.
They took payment from their victims despite having no intention of providing sexual services. Once inside their homes, Mihai secretly added gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) to their drinks.
GBL converts into the powerful sedative GHB in the body and was used to render the men unconscious before Mihai and Dumitru stole possessions including watches and aftershave.
Two of their victims died.
Malcolm King, 80, from Bagendon near Cirencester, was found dead at his home on 21 August 2024.
Gary Mouat, 37, was found dead at his home in Banbury on 13 July 2025.
Two other men survived after being drugged and robbed.
The investigation began following Mr Mouat’s death, when a post-mortem examination established that he had been poisoned with GBL.
While Mihai was at Mr Mouat’s home, Dumitru sent her a text in Romanian which translated as: “OK put [him] to sleep.”
He then sent another message telling her to look for a watch, jewellery and other valuables.
Forensic links between the two cases subsequently led Gloucestershire Constabulary’s Major Crime Investigation Team to reopen enquiries into the death of Mr King, which had initially been considered non-suspicious because of a pre-existing health condition.
Further toxicology testing established that Mr King had also been poisoned with GBL.
Detectives then identified two surviving victims from across southern England who had been drugged and robbed by Mihai and Dumitru.
The pair were arrested on 31 July 2025 and charged on 6 August following Mr Mouat’s death. They were charged in connection with Mr King’s death on 24 April 2026.
Before sentencing, the court heard devastating Victim Impact Statements from the families of both men.
Mr King’s daughter said: “When my father was killed, the defendants did not only end his future. They stole mine as well.”
Mr King’s sister said she struggled to come to terms with the fact that her brother’s life had been unlawfully taken.
Mr Mouat’s wife Louise described how she had to tell their eight-year-old son that his father had died.
She said: “You’ve destroyed my present and taken away my future; you’ve taken away the plan for Gary and me to grow our family.”
His nine-year-old son told the court: “I will never get over my dad being killed, I will never forget him and I will miss him for the rest of my life.”
Sentencing the pair, Her Honourable Mrs Justice Brunner KC said they should have realised that secretly administering an uncontrolled dose of a serious substance to strangers was a risk to their lives.
She said: “You left each victim alone in deep unconsciousness and a moment’s thought could and should have led to the realisation that they might never come around.”
The judge also praised the joint investigation by Thames Valley Police and Gloucestershire Constabulary.
Detective Inspector Adam Stacey, of Gloucestershire Constabulary’s Major Crime Investigation Team, described Mihai and Dumitru as “callous individuals” who deliberately incapacitated their victims with a dangerous drug before leaving them unconscious and alone.
He said: “Sadly, Malcolm King and Gary Mouat lost their lives as a result of their actions and our thoughts remain with their families.
“I am glad that these dangerous people are behind bars and cannot inflict any more pain and suffering.”
DI Stacey said police believe there could be more victims who encountered Mihai in similar circumstances.
He urged anyone who believes they may have been drugged and had possessions stolen to contact police, stressing that reports would be dealt with sensitively and discreetly.
Thames Valley Police Detective Inspector Michael Roddy said the pair had deliberately exploited men for financial gain”, describing their offending as calculated and predatory.
He said the investigation had uncovered a dangerous pattern of behaviour which may otherwise have remained hidden.
Charles White, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said Mihai and Dumitru had exploited their victims in a calculated scheme and showed a complete disregard for the potentially devastating consequences of administering a powerful sedative.
He added: “What began as a cynical plot to steal from their victims ended in the loss of two lives.”
Police are continuing to appeal to anyone who believes they may have encountered Mihai and Dumitru or may have been a victim of their offending.
