At around 3.40am, a member of the public reported concerns for a woman seen walking along the southbound hard shoulder near junction 8, close to Strensham Services.
Officers located the woman, who said a man had punched her, dragged her into the motorway, and damaged her car by smashing off its wing mirrors. The vehicle had been parked on the hard shoulder. She suffered minor injuries and was left shaken.
The incident took place between junctions 8 and 9 at approximately 3am.
A man in his 50s from Evesham was arrested on suspicion of common assault and later released on bail. Police are continuing to investigate and are keen to speak with anyone who witnessed the incident.
In particular, officers wish to trace the driver of a white van who stopped at the scene, took the woman home, and later returned to collect her car.
