Stroud’s Subscription Rooms were brought to life as world-renowned Boogie Woogie pianist Ben Waters and his band delivered an electrifying performance to an enthusiastic audience.

Organised by local blues musician Gerald Fry, the well-attended event was a resounding success, raising an impressive total of £2,839.48 for Muscular Dystrophy UK and the Stroud Subscription Rooms.

The evening was not only a celebration of exceptional musical talent but also a testament to the generosity and spirit of the Stroud community. Gerald Fry, who won a private performance by the Ben Waters Band in a recent competition, chose to transform his prize into an opportunity to give back. By donating all profits from the concert, Gerald ensured that funds were directed to two worthy causes: Muscular Dystrophy UK, a leading charity dedicated to fighting muscle-wasting conditions, and the Subscription Rooms, a beloved cornerstone of Stroud’s vibrant arts scene.

“This event exceeded all expectations,” said Gerald Fry. “It was an honour to bring Ben and his band to Stroud and to witness the community uniting in support of these important causes. The night was filled with incredible music, and I’m thrilled we could raise such a significant amount for Muscular Dystrophy UK and the Stroud Subscription Rooms. My heartfelt thanks go out to all the musicians who generously performed for free, and to everyone who made this unforgettable evening possible.”

Ben Waters himself expressed his delight at being part of the event, stating: “It was absolutely amazing to return to Stroud and perform for such an enthusiastic crowd. The energy in the room was incredible, and I’m so proud that we were able to raise funds for such worthy causes. Events like these show the power of music to bring people together.”

Known for his dynamic performances that have captivated audiences worldwide, Ben Waters was joined by his talented band members, Ian Jennings on double bass and Kevin Crowe on drums. Two exceptional musicians were also welcomed to the line-up: Tom Waters, renowned for his remarkable alto saxophone skills and a regular in the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, and the charismatic “Honky Tonk Soul Man,” Tommy Hare, who contributed his rich vocals and engaging stage presence.

Gerald Fry himself took to the stage during the evening, performing alongside the Ben Waters Band and showcasing his blues talent on the harmonica. Support act Savannah Gardner also captivated the audience with her unique take on the outlaw country genre, ensuring the night was a truly memorable experience for all who attended.

“We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who came out to support this event,” Gerald Fry added: “The atmosphere was fantastic, and it’s clear that live music holds a special place in the hearts of the people of Stroud.”
