Stroud District Council’s ambition for the district to become carbon neutral by the year 2030 has been given a boost from The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).
The Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund (SHDF) Demonstrator grant will allow Stroud District Council’s housing service to `deep retrofit’ 28 council houses with the aim of significantly improving energy efficiency, reducing their carbon footprint and fuel costs for tenants.
The bid was led by Stroud District Council in partnership with Two Rivers Housing and Cheltenham Borough Homes.
Stroud District Council Strategic Director of Place Brendan Cleere said: “Providing affordable, energy efficient homes for our diverse and changing population is one of the council’s key priorities. I’m proud that Stroud district will pioneer investment in our communities by making them more energy efficient, and helping those in the greatest need afford rising fuels costs.
“Stroud District Council was the first carbon neutral council in Europe, and thanks to this award we are one step closer to achieving our ambition for the entire district to become carbon neutral by 2030. “
The SHDF Demonstrator project is an initial investment to pilot the effectiveness of these measures and demonstrate innovative approaches to reducing the carbon footprint of homes.
Stroud District Council is the only local authority in Gloucestershire which owns and manages its own homes, with the others having transferred them into social housing organisations.
