A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Alex Gayner after the Brimscombe striker suffered a horrific double leg break in a pre-season friendly.

The former Sharpness, Shortwood United and Longlevens striker snapped his right tibia and fibula following a challenge during Brimscombe’s pre-season friendly against Chalford at the Meadow on Saturday.

Such was the extent of the injury, the match was abandoned and Gayner was taken to hospital.

A statement from Brimscombe FC on Sunday, said: “During our pre-season friendly with Chalford, a terrible accident happened, which resulted in the game being abandoned. Unfortunately we have received news that our player Alex Gayner suffered a double fibula and tibia break.

“Alex has just come out of his first operation and will be in hospital for around 10 days due to needing a second.

“Everyone at the club is wishing him all the best and will be there for whatever he needs to support him back to fitness. A huge thank you must be said to everyone that helped with Alex, we know he really appreciated it.”

Gayner’s twin brother Dan, who signed for Brimscombe this month, has set up the GoFundMe page to support his sibling in his long road to recovery, he said: “I am fundraising for my brother Alex. He has suffered a serious leg injury where both his tibia and fibula were completely snapped and as a result, pierced the skin.

“The road to recovery requires two major operations and a skin graft. Because of this, he will be out of work for at least two months.

“Please give anything you can to donate, as this would help towards his monthly bills in this period – thanks everyone.”
