Bus shelter upgrade

MOST READ

Stroud Town Council is launching the first phase of its Better Bus Stops Stroud project with the installation of new accessible seating and upgraded panels at bus shelters across the town.

The initiative aims to improve comfort, accessibility, and community ownership at nine bus shelters recently adopted by the town council. Five shelters will receive upgraded seating, while others will benefit from new panels to replace those damaged by wear or vandalism.

Cllr Adrian Oldman said: “Accessible seating with arms is important for anyone waiting at a bus shelter. These upgrades will not only extend the life of the shelters, but also make the experience of waiting more enjoyable – without the risk of slipping off seats!”

About the Upgrades:
The new seating is designed for durability and accessibility, featuring wood-effect slats and a high-quality, long-lasting finish. In some shelters, seating will not be installed where space limitations would reduce accessibility for wheelchair users or people with pushchairs. High-use locations such as Tesco and Beeches Green Surgery have been prioritised for seating upgrades.

Shelters Receiving Seating and Panel Upgrades:

  • Beeches Green Surgery – What3Words: merley.duke.hurtles
  • Stratford Road (Church of the Holy Spirit) – vegetable.moped.hails
  • London Road (next to Bowbridge Arms) – envoy.laminate.minority
  • Stratford Road (Tesco superstore) – codes.scum.motive
  • Cainscross Road (The Range) – twitches.gurgling.explores

Shelters Receiving Panel Upgrades Only:

  • Farmhill Lane (next to Bryon Road) – bubbles.relate.disingage
  • Stratford Road North – glider.leader.situates

Other Upgrade:

  • Farmhill Lane (opposite Paganhill Estate junction) – pokers.roosters.deals → new timetable case.

Installation Schedule:
Work will take place on Friday 22, Saturday 23, and Sunday 24 August. Temporary bus stops will be set up next to each shelter during installation. Diagrams and further details are available on the Stroud Town Council website.

Next Steps in the Project:

  • Bus Shelter Artwork: Local schools and artists will collaborate on artwork for eight shelters. Artists can apply via the Stroud Town Council website by Friday 22 August.
  • Bus User Forum: 30 residents are being recruited to help shape future shelter designs, with a £25 voucher offered to participants.
